KIRKSVILLE, MO - Recent trends in energy prices and policy have made it clear that agriculture will play an important role in America’s energy future. However, concerns over the growing use of biofuels and biomass, their impact on food availability and price, and their broader environmental impact have generated debate about the sustainability of current bioenergy developments.

National experts will confront these issues at a Bioenergy Conference to be held December 5, 2008, at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. The conference will provide professional development training targeted to high school and college agriculture faculty members, extension personnel, natural resource and conservation agency personnel, community leaders, and anyone interested in a sustainable energy future.

December 8, 2008, 3:30 p.m.

Ebling Symposium Center, Microbial Sciences Building, 1550 Linden Drive, UW-Madison

Each fall, the Department of Biochemistry organizes the Contemporary Biochemistry Lecture Series as a contribution to the life sciences, chemical sciences, engineering and other intellectual communities at UW-Madison. The Fall 2008 theme is “Biofuels.” The lectures will cover emerging results in biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, microbiology, plant sciences, ecology, national policy, and industrial efforts contributing to progress in this area of national research priority. A list of the local, national, and international speakers recruited for this series is available on the Department of Biochemistry Web site. Given the high level of societal interest in this topic and the urgent needs to address many concerns regarding sources of energy in the coming years, this seminar series may be of broad interest. This seminar series also recognizes the establishment at UW-Madison of the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, one of three national research centers established by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Contemporary Biochemistry Lecture Series is made possible by the following sponsors:

The 2009 International Conference on the Integration of Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development in the Context of Climate Change, the Energy Crisis and Food Insecurity is now accepting proposals. The deadline for abstract/proposal submission is January 15, 2009.

This Conference, as the outcome of joint efforts, is aimed at independent research organizations,
universities, government agencies, policy-makers, public policy advocates, nongovernmental
organizations (NGO) and corporate representatives from developing and developed countries. All of these stakeholders are interested in looking critically at the ways in which research is - and can be - used to create change worldwide. This Scientific Meeting will endeavor not only to share research results, but also to identify future research prospects, challenges, issues and concerns. Moreover, the organizers of this Meeting would like to generate innovative thinking in agricultural and rural development and to identify elements of a longer term research agenda to fill critical gaps in knowledge on these issues - through rigorous, defensible data collection, analysis interpretation and communication. They also would like to develop research projects and networks in these fields involving researchers from both developed and developing countries: believing that partnerships among researchers are critical components of any meaningful effort to develop synergistic research and change agendas.

At the heart of these intellectual concerns there is also the expectation of accomplishing a high
visibility scientific event that will share knowledge, skills and successful experiences, while
proposing new ways for concrete actions and strategies associated with any policy of sustainable
agriculture and rural development. The Conference will provide an opportunity for participants to
identify obstacles and constraints across specific regions of the world, and from lessons learned and best practices shared. As the remit of the Conference is global, experiences and issues from any part of the world are welcome.

For more information about the conference or submitting proposals, download the Conference flyer here.

There has been a tremendous upsurge of interest in sustainable fuels and chemicals production over the past several years. Government and private sector support for research, development and deployment of renewable fuels and chemicals technologies is at an all time high. This year’s Symposium provides a superb forum for experts from around the world to gather to discuss the latest research breakthroughs and results in this exciting and growing field. This year’s scientific program is designed to facilitate effective exchange of new information and technical progress among attendees from industrial, academic, and government sectors. The program includes a variety of oral presentation sessions, poster sessions and special topic sessions as well as ample opportunities to participate in informal discussions. Participants’ experiences will also be enhanced by social activities and optional tours to explore the many offerings available in the greater northern California bay area region.

December 15, 2008 - Deadline for abstract submission
