The GLBRC works on a large scale to remove bottlenecks in the biofuels pipeline, which boils down to developing and perfecting an efficient way to make biofuels from biomass. The center continues to research biofuels alongside its missions of education, training and outreach. This dedication to both research and education is what sets the GLBRC apart. The center has developed educational materials to help everyone understand the complexity of bioenergy. These and other materials are also available in the Press Room.

Postdoctoral Position: Biofuel Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

The new DOE Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) has an opening for an ecologist to investigate the consequences of cellulosic biofuel production systems on biodiversity and ecosystem services. The successful candidate will design and direct studies examining the impacts of cellulosic biofuel crops on insect biodiversity and ecosystem services at the landscape scale. In addition, the position will hold responsibility for helping to coordinate a team of researchers examining similar impacts on bird, plant and microbial diversity. We are particularly interested in applicants with excellent organizational and communication skills and some combination of experience in landscape ecology, spatial analysis, GIS, and evaluation of insect-mediated ecosystem services including biological pest control or pollination. A PhD degree in Entomology or a related discipline preferred. A valid driver’s license is required. The position will be located in E. Lansing with frequent travel throughout the lower peninsula of Michigan. This is a 2 year position with potential for renewal. Salary and benefits are highly competitive.

National Academy of Sciences presents “What You Need to Know About Energy”

American society, with a standard of living unprecedented in human history, can attribute a large measure of its success to increasingly sophisticated uses of energy. The strength of industry, the speed of transportation, the myriad comforts and conveniences of home and workplace, and the security of the nation all derive from ever more ingenious provision and application of various sources and forms of energy.

But that condition has come at a cost—to irreplaceable resources, to the environment, and to our national independence. Society has begun to question the methods we use to power modern life and to search for better alternatives. As the nationwide debate continues, it is already evident that managing energy use wisely in the 21^st century will call for balancing three essential, but quite different, concerns: resources, responsibility, and security.

Michigan State and Michigan Tech Host Biofuels Summit in Escanaba

To help Michigan State University and Michigan Technological University create a research agenda aimed at meeting the needs of Michigan’s developing wood-based bioeconomy businesses, the two universities held a biofuels summit on Feb. 25, 2008.
